What Is A Heat Pump And How Does It Work?

Heat pumps are designed to provide both heating and cooling. They have two components: an indoor coil and an outdoor unit. The outdoor unit uses the outdoor air temperature to produce heat for your home. Cold climate heat pumps can now produce heat till outdoor temperatures of -25 C to -30 C and beyond!

As the carbon tax and gas pricing increase, heat pumps are very effective to offset the costs of expensive fuels such as propane and oil. They are also extremely effective in reducing your carbon footprint!

In Ontario, heat pumps require a back-up heat source. As the outdoor temperature drops the indoor air temperature produced reduces. Depending on the model of heat pump, when the outdoor temperatures go below -15C, the temperature produced to heat the home will start to decrease. The system will automatically turn on the back-up heat source, when the heat pump is not able to keep up your set indoor temperature. Select emergency heat any time you don’t wish to run the heat pump. This will keep the backup heat on until you choose to put it back on heat pump mode.

Heat pumps outdoor units are installed on top of a stand, which is necessary to allow space for the units to go into a defrost cycle. The unit will go into a defrost cycle when it deems it necessary. After each defrost cycle, you will notice the outdoor unit will drip water; this is normal! Steam and noise from the outdoor unit during the defrost cycle is normal operation.

During the winter months, regularly check to ensure the snow doesn’t exceed the height of the stand and remove any snow on the top of the unit.

Heat pumps produce a passive heat, which will maintain the temperature of your home. It will produce enough heat to maintain room temperature. It is not recommended to run a program. For example, setting the night temperature lower than your desired daytime temperature. It is best to set the thermostat to a comfortable temperature for both the day and night.

“We just had our heat pump replaced after it died recently by Joe's Heating and Air Conditioning. I wanted to deal with a company that had a great reputation that also carried Mitsubishi equipment. I dealt with Eric who came over and carefully looked at our setup and was able to recommend the right solutions at good prices. Brian and Tim arrived on time and did a great job, and were able to give me some valuable tips on use and maintenance. The whole experience was a win win, thanks!”

“Heat pump was beautifully installed quickly (about 2 days) and it works great. They took care to make sure all the cables were nicely bunched together and zip-tied and factored in where my future walls in the basement would be. They even added a little document holder to the side of the furnace to hold the manuals and such, a perfect solution I appreciate a lot. Super happy with everything!”
